MUSIC AND MOVING IMAGES

The joint masters course explores the relationship between music, moving images, space, and interdisciplinary audiovisual creation through structural principles that can organize both sound and image.

The musical part focuses on shared structures in organizing musical material, drawing on compositional approaches from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century. These principles are also considered in relation to spatial organization and audiovisual installation.

The moving-image part focuses on experimental visual technologies and their artistic use in contemporary art. Students examine how moving and non-moving images, machine vision, scanning and tracking systems, immersive environments, generative text-to-image models, and video game-based audiovisual forms can be directed, installed, and experienced in space.

The course combines online lectures, seminars, and independent preparation with an intensive Erasmus week in Vilnius dedicated to developing site-specific audiovisual works for projection, installation, public presentation, and spatial video-mapping experiments.

PERCEPTUAL OUTLINES OF PHENOMENOLOGICAL MUSIC ANALYSIS

The course focuses on the fundamental parameters of musical perception—timbre, pitch, loudness, and time—and their role in shaping musical texture. It also examines memory and anticipation as essential to perceiving rhythm, syntax, and form, as well as associations with movement, energy, weight, and space.

Gestalt principles—including figure–ground organization, proximity, similarity, continuity, reification, and multistability—provide a framework for connecting perceptual and structural analysis. Through lectures, seminars, independent study, and twentieth- and twenty-first-century repertoire, students develop tools for interpreting music as an evolving perceptual experience.
